WV Fun Flyers - November - 2003
PRESIDENTS COLUMN
Another Year Gone Bye
As November wafts to a close it is time to reflect on the WVFF past year. It has been a year dominated by weather. We were visited by both flood and wind with both events bringing out the best in the club. Our flying is weather determined and we can not change it so we have to modify our activities to suit the prevailing weather. The tornado (hopefully a once in a lifetime occurrence) changed the way I look at an aircraft tie down. It makes sense to have tie downs that really "tie down" the plane and have sufficient strength. Sometimes the wind is so strong that nothing works well (as witnessed by the hangar roof) . On the other hand, we are used to the floods and have a little more time to observe and move the planes (did you see Henry and Jack on the channel 8 news?). In this instance, we observed barrels and bass boats going down the river but fortunately no aircraft. In both of these weather extremes, members of our club worked together to protect each individuals assets. So if you were there, I say thank you. If you weren't able to be there, be sure and say thank you to someone. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this winter as the first of the new year rolls around. Remember there is an informal gathering of all interested on New Years day at the field to try and get the years first flight in. Dress warmly, look forward to a fun, frigid, flight and we'll try and get you up in something in the New Year.
Note: Remember that Dec.17, 1903 is the date that started it all. Watch the news for information on the re-enactment of the historic Kitty Hawk /Wright Flyer flight on Dec. 17, 2003!
Minutes
2:15 p.m.
We had 40+ folks at the meeting on a beautiful warm sunny day in West Virginia.
WE now have new table courtesy of Curtis and Kathy Pack.
There was talk about putting a light over the restroom doorway, more than a few mentioned that it could be a problem at dusk under some circumstances. There did not appear to be much enthusiasm, but some is looking in to the concern.
Captain Rogers, once again being complemented on the job of clearing the field. Captain represents the very best at WVFF.
There was much discussion on moving the windsock, since the clearing up along side of the runway, it appears much closer than it was before. No, it hasn’t moved it is an optical illusion. This will be discussed again at another meeting.
The Christmas Party on December 6th at 5:30pm was discussed, it will be held at Kathy & Curtis Pack’s home which is about a half mile south of the airport.
The food is to be Turkey and Ham (Dave Barnes is cooking the ham).
WE are being asked to bring side dishes to go with the above and to bring deserts.
Gifts: If you want to be a part of the gift giving, at the Christmas party, please bring a gift for a man by a man, and a gift for a woman by a woman. This way there will be one for one (Hopefully no shortages or leftovers).
It was further suggested that we keep the gifts to a max of $10.
WE can expect to be entertained by the Leon High School Choir, sounds great!!!
Please let Kathy Pack know if you are bringing children.
At he party we will be electing new officers for 2004, have some names in mind, AND please ask your nominees in advance.
Rubber Chicken Award
Was awarded to Glenn Becket, no one was sure why except he was the winning nominee and Lindsey couldn’t wait to present it to him. It is so nice to see the compassion and concern at these awards. Kevin was overly joyful at the award. He was the other nominee.
The Eagle Award was presented to Kevin Pauley for his “Candy Drop” for the kids at the mini fly in last month.
Micky Watson was congratulated on becoming an Advanced Flight Instructor (AFI).
The meeting closed with a discussion of the New Sport Pilot Qualifications as we understand them at present.
Meeting ended at 3:30 p.m.
And the flying began until sundown.
