WV Fun Flyers - May, 2003

A word from your President

In lieu of of our normal President's column we present a true story for your entertainment.

A Tail of Two Travelers - by Curtis Pack.

Minutes Saturday, May 3, 2003

Meeting was called to order by our President Curtis Pack at approximately 2pm.

First order of business was to announce the donations for the raffle, as we need to raise money to defray our heavy expenses of late.

Kevin gave a prop that he had made (A handsome piece, of course - I mean the prop?) We also received an electric drill, a soldering tool and a stuffed bear.

Lounge (site of the heavy expenses) was reported to have a very nice floor installed with a pattern that the ladies liked.

The secretary brought up the copying of the Newsletter.  He has to travel over 50 miles to get the use of the machine which sometimes, just doesn’t work.  Ken Skeen volunteered to be a back up for copying when needed.  To have the copying done professionally would cost around $50-70.

It was suggested that we as a club belong to USUA and ASC.

Gil Watkins donated an 8ft table.

There was a discussion on the direction of take off on calm days.  We were reminded to use caution and to remember that a landing airplane always has the "right of way."

We have two runways - the longer one being the original along the river and a second one to the east (away from the river) being used mostly for Powered Parachutes.

It is always a good practice to simulate emergency procedures BUT only when there is little or no other traffic.

While it is fun to buzz local fields we were warned not to buzz, boats, tractors, or houses.

Treasurer reported a balance in the bank of $740.00.

It was suggested and passed that the next News Letter (this one) be the last unless a person has paid the current dues.

It was suggested that we add an Eagle Award for someone that does something notable for the club.

The May “Rubber Chicken” award went this month to Mickey and Chuck for poor "pre-flight."

Curtis was a close "runner-up" for picking up a "hot" gear without a glove - OUCH!!!!

The windows need caulking and the outside of the Club House needs painting, any volunteers????????

Meeting adjourned 2:40pm.

Pilot dies when ultralight crashes
April 12, 2003  GROVELAND -- A 30-year-old Maryland man died Friday when the ultralight plane he was flying crashed near the grass landing strip of the Groveland airport south of the city.

Chad Elchin of Ridgely, Md., was flying about 800 feet in the air in a Dragonfly ultralight aircraft when witnesses heard a "pop" about 11:15 a.m., said Lt. Nick Pallitto of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.  "It's not sure if the wing became unattached," Pallitto said. "But it landed about 100 feet from the rest of the ultralight."   Witnesses said the ultralight came down nose first into the ground, according to Pallitto.

The area around the grass airstrip where the crash occurred was filled with tents and campers, many of them competitors in a hang-gliding competition that begins today and runs through Friday.
The Quest Air Hang Gliding competition has attracted more than 100 hang gliders from 18 countries, said Bob Lane of Quest Air.  Elchin was in a motor-powered ultralight, not a hang glider, Lane said.
