New Years Day Fly

There will not be a January meeting, but join us New Years day for our traditional first flights of the year. Kathy Pack will host a lunch at the Pack’s house at 1:00.

Christmas Party and Meeting

Our annual Christmas party and election of officers was held Saturday, December 3rd, At Curtis and Kathy Pack’s house, in their brand new addition to the house. The room was decorated with Christmas lights, and a tree, and a great dinner of turkey, ham, etc., was catered by the Leon Elementary School cooks. Curtis had a video projector set up, showing aerial photos taken by Steve Doll, as well as RC flying bloopers. He also had a flight simulator for folks to enjoy, and Kevin Pauley did a RC helicopter flying demo in the upstairs area of the addition. After the great meal and some fellowship, a brief meeting was held, consisting mainly of the election of officers for the coming year. Congratulations to the new officers.

President Mickey Watson

Vice President Raine Beller

Secretary/Newsletter Gretchen Watson

Treasurer Steve Doll

Again, congratulations, folks, and lets all support this crew in their leadership of the club, and much thanks to the outgoing officers who have served the club in their respective positions for the last few years, Pres. Dave Groff and Treas. Laura Jensen. (VP Mickey, continues his service, stepping up to the “top job”)

Don’t forget, especially, to support the newsletter editor with your submissions of articles, events, comments or suggestions. Gretchen has been doing a wonderful job with the web site since it’s inception a few years ago, and will produce a fine newsletter, but I’m sure all ideas and submissions will be greatly appreciated.

Linzy Escapes Camper Fire at Leon

Last month, long time WVFF member (old guy) , Linzy Hickman, was napping in his driving camper, parked by his hangar, when he awoke to find the camper filled with smoke and flames. He managed to escape, and grab several of the small fire extinguishers we all have in our hangars, from his and neighboring hangars. He was able to control and extinguish the fire, but his camper, although still drivable, was considered a total loss by the insurance company. Linzy reports that the fire started in the electrical control area, and had he not awoken when he did, he would not have made it out. He estimates another 30 seconds and he would have been “toast” (sorry, I couldn’t resist, especially since things turned out ok, we can joke now).

Leon Stuff

Despite some recent bitterly cold, and less than ideal weather, some folks have managed to get some flying in, including a recent trip to Ravenswood, Jackson County (I18). Glen Beckett and Russell Browning flew the Cessna 150, while Steve Doll and Mickey Watson took their trikes, with Gretchen Watson in her Tbird. Bret Shirley has gotten some air time in his trike, as well as Linzy flying the Dac in some local flights. I haven’t been able to get to the airport in a month, due to work and family commitments. Hopefully things will slow down a bit soon, and hopefully we will have some decent weather (yeah, I know, Winter has just started, but maybe we can catch a break now and then).

Don’t forget to check the web site occasionally. Gretchen has regular updates about things going on in the “News Flash” section, and there is a plethora of photos to view, including photos of all the aircraft based at Leon, in the “Hangars” section.

This will be my last edition of the newsletter, so we can all look forward to a new style and point of view in the future, but if anyone has anything to submit, articles, suggestions, etc., feel free to send it to me, and I will forward it to Gretchen. Thanks for all of your support during my tenure at this post.
