WV FUN FLYERS

August 2004

Next Meeting, Saturday, September 4th

The club will be furnishing fried chicken for the 1:00 pm lunch, with meeting to follow. As always, bring a side dish or dessert, and soft drinks.

At the August meeting, Dave Groff was the lucky winner of the quilt being raffled for fund raising. We made $330.00 on the raffle. We finally got to hold the flying competition, which had been delayed from the previous month due to inclement weather. Laura Jensen has written complete coverage of the competition ( to follow somewhere in this newsletter). Thanks so much, Laura, for your contribution. This seems like a good time to beg for articles, suggestions, etc, to make this a better newsletter. My address, phone number and email address is on every newsletter, so you have no excuse not to be able to get your submissions in.

Total Eclipse Fly-In

We had at least a few of our members attend the Carrolton, Ohio event this year. Captain Rogers, Kevin Pauley and Laura Jensen drove up and camped, and Rick Johnson flew the Challenger up Saturday afternoon, and flew back to Hale’s Landing on Sunday, returning to Leon Monday evening. I didn’t get to attend this year, so I’m not aware of other members that may have attended.

Leon Stuff

Ray Jarvis’ white and blue Cessna Cardinal has departed Leon, to Miami, Florida. The purchasers recently came to the airport to check it out, decided to buy it, then proceeded to dismantle it and hauled it away on a much too small trailer. There must have been 8 or 10 feet of the tail section hanging over the end of the trailer. I hope they made it to their destination without any difficulties.

Raine Beller recently experienced an off-field landing, when a piece of his exhaust departed his Rally, passing through the propeller. The damaged propeller became terribly unbalanced, producing extreme and potentially damaging vibration. Raine immediately (and wisely) switched off the ignition and landed across the river and a couple of miles upstream from the airport. After securing the plane, he returned the following evening, borrowing John Townsend’s prop, and flew back to the airport.

We had a visit from a very nice Whittman Tailwind, based out of Mason County. I was busy and didn’t get the owner/pilot’s name. My wife took a couple of pictures, but I’m not going to have time to mess with pictures this month. I will try to get one in next month’s newsletter.

Vinton County Air Show

Air show, chicken bar-b-q, classic airplanes, cars, skydivers, barnstorming. Sunday, September 19th, starting 11:00 am. FAA seminar 11:00 am, air show 1:00pm, children’s candy drop 3:00pm. Vinton County Airport, 5 miles north of McArthur, Ohio

My Kitten Paint Job

My wife, Phyllis, and I recently spent a week camping at the airport, then every evening for 4 days, stripping the paint and re-painting my J3 Kitten. While it turned out to be a bigger job than I had expected (mostly just time consuming), I think it turned out pretty well. It was a highly unprofessional job, but I only screwed up a couple of times. Since I didn’t have a location or equipment (or ability) to spray the paint, and having seen Kevin’s good results using a roller, I decided to go that route. The old paint was peeling off badly, and I had been putting off the refurbishment for too long. I was not expecting a professional job, just hoping to make it a little more presentable. I would be highly remiss not to immensely thank my wonderful wife for all her patience and assistance. She helped with the paint stripping and painting, hanging the wings, ran for paint and supplies (and food). She even came back Monday, after working midnight shift Sunday night, to mask off and paint the stripes on the last wing. Also, thanks to Mark Payne for helping us mount the wings back onto the plane. Check it out next time you are at the field (just don’t look too close).
